Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump has signed a landmark executive order launching a national initiative to boost artificial intelligence (AI) education across the United States. The primary goal is to prepare the next generation of American students for an economy powered by AI, one of the fastest-growing technology sectors today.
Under the new order, Trump will establish a White House AI Education Task Force, chaired by the director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy. The task force will include key secretaries of Energy, Education, Agriculture, and Labor, as well as special advisor David Sacks, who serves as a White House strategic advisor on AI and cryptocurrency.
“Young Americans need to be equipped with the skills and knowledge to not only use but also create next-generation AI technology,” the White House stressed in a press release.
In addition to establishing the task force, the order also introduces the President’s AI Challenge, a program to honor outstanding students, teachers, and researchers in the field of AI. The initiative is expected to create momentum for widespread adoption of AI, as well as build bridges between the public, private, and academic sectors to solve pressing problems with AI-based solutions.
In addition, the order directs the Department of Education to prioritize AI teacher training programs in existing funding packages, and directs the Director of the National Science Foundation to focus on research on teaching methods and applications of AI in school settings.
However, questions remain about how to implement this initiative, especially in the context of the sharp cuts in the education budget since Trump began his second term. Mobilizing enough resources to synchronously deploy training programs, improve teacher capacity and innovate teaching methods will be a difficult problem.
“Preparing students to become future leaders in the field of AI cannot be separated from investing in teachers – the ones who directly impart knowledge and skills,” the White House affirmed.
With this executive order, President Trump lays the foundation for a long-term strategy in the race to become the world leader in AI – not only in terms of technology, but also in education, training and preparing human resources for the future economy. However, the actual effectiveness of this strategy will depend on the level of coordination between federal agencies and the ability to overcome the budget challenge in the coming time.
