This Week in Web3 Gaming: Nintendo Denies AI, Adidas Launches NFT Apparel, and Symbiogenesis Teams Up with Sony

Looking for the latest in blockchain gaming, from high-profile collaborations to limited-run NFT releases? This week’s newsletter gives you a bird’s-eye view of the big developments in the global Web3 gaming space.

As more traditional brands enter the blockchain space, we’re seeing a strong crossover between gaming culture, Web3 technology, and dedicated gaming communities.

Square Enix Expands Symbiogenesis to Sony’s Soneium Network

After a strong season of content on Polygon, Square Enix has announced that it will bring its NFT game Symbiogenesis to Soneium — the layer-2 Ethereum network developed by Sony in collaboration with Startale Labs.

The expansion not only brings Symbiogenesis into Sony’s ecosystem, but also links in-game content to two other games on the platform: Sleepagotchi and Evermoon. Players who complete the quest before May 31 will receive a multi-game interactive NFT, opening up the possibility of cross-universe Web3 interactions.

Adidas releases exclusive NFT boxes on Xociety

Adidas continues to expand its blockchain footprint by partnering with online game Xociety Sui to launch 2,600 NFT mystery boxes, each worth $129. The boxes will be available from May 16–23 on Tradeport, containing virtual Adidas outfits for avatars in the “pop shooter” style game.

The NFTs are graded in rarity, from Uncommon (three sets) to First Class (eight full sets), with an XCS token representing a stake in the Xociety ecosystem.

Xociety’s next beta will launch on May 15 via the Epic Games Store, in an effort to expand its global player base.

Coinbase Officially Sponsors Valorant and LoL Esports

Coinbase has become the exclusive cryptocurrency exchange for two of the world’s top esports games, League of Legends and Valorant, through a multi-year deal with Riot Games.

Kicking off at Valorant Masters Toronto in June, the partnership will bring features like in-game financial reporting, viewer rewards, and Web3-integrated engagement campaigns. It’s a strategic move to fill the void left by the collapse of FTX — a former sponsor with a $100 million deal.
